Message from The Head of Department

I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Medical Technology and I am grateful for your interest in our programme that leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in either Medical Technology or Medical Imaging.

The Department offers you the opportunity to join an exciting and vibrant profession whose primary objective is to provide accurate laboratory or imaging results to the physician for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Medical Technologists are not restricted to working in a hospital; our graduates are also employed in industry and research facilities. Persons who obtain a BSc in Medical Imaging can gain employment at any private or public hospital and perform tests such as X-ray, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computerised Tomography (CT) scans.

The strength of our Department lies in our academic and non-academic staff who are dedicated and committed to helping students achieve their greatest potential.

We are unique in that we limit our class sizes so that during the classes and laboratory practicals students receive significant individual attention. We also have attachment (Clinical Laboratory Practice or Professional Medical Imaging Practice courses) periods which are carried out at the end of the second, third and fourth years. During this period, Medical Technology and Medical Imaging students are attached to various public and private laboratories or hospitals and this provides a mechanism to put their academic learning into practice.

Competency and professionalism are our watch words.

If you have any questions, please contact our Department (592-222-4925 or 592-222-5404) and one of our staff will be happy to speak with you.

I look forward to having you join our Medical Technology (Med. Tech.) family here at the University of Guyana.

Sincerely,

Ede Tyrell,
Head Department of Medical Technology
