T

he Diploma in Pharmacy begun at the University of Guyana in the 1970’s, this was upgraded to an Associate of Science Degree and in 2010, there was the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. We are currently the only university in Guyana, offering the BSc. in Pharmacy degree.

The BSc. in Pharmacy is a 4-year program that is taught through a combination of rigorous didactic, laboratory sessions; and practical attachment at various pharmaceutical institutions. The scope that the pharmacy degree allows, is large and it is a highly competitive programme. It caters for a rounded pharmacist who can function in a several capacities, inclusive of manufacturing, distribution, hospital and community pharmacy; with our recent expansion in the area of clinical pharmacy.

The didactic component includes courses that would cover foundation core courses, pharmacy calculations, dosage form design and pharmaceutics, basic and applied pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, natural products, pharmacotherapy, research and clinical pharmacy.

Laboratory sessions are engaged to broaden the student’s scope in the areas of chemistry, dosage form design and pharmaceutics, natural products and clinical pharmacy.

There are immediate practice experiences at the end of each academic year where students are attached to various institutions depending of the theory covered, to garner necessary skill components – manufacturing, drug distribution, community, regulatory and hospital (dispensary and clinical ward experience). These experiences prepare our graduate for licensure and for fulfilling rewarding careers in pharmacy.

Our main aim is to train our graduates to be practice ready in this dynamic profession of pharmacy. With the advent of Pharmaceutical Care and the involvement of a pharmacist in a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, we strive to meet this transformed role of a pharmacist for future leaders in pharmacy practice.
